I love a good planner. I like the illusion of being organized and on top of my life. The problem is that I fall into traps. I see a new planner and think, ooohhhhh, that looks nice. But many of them have all this nonsense I don't need. For example, I currently am using a Panda Planner, which I do really like. But every day they have a whole page spread for the day:
There is a space to put some gratitude every day - that's awesome. There is a space to put things you are looking forward to - that's also awesome. There are boxes to list priorities and plan things out. There is a timeline so you can note appointments. In front, there are monthly calendars - which I use a lot actually. There are also weekly check-ins; Big Wins, Things to Improve, Planning for the coming week, large boxes for projects, etc. The truth of the matter, and this is almost freeing to admit, is that I'm at the point in my life where I don't have a lot of big projects going on. Sure I have things to do, laundry, house cleaning, CTY, planning, etc. But I wouldn't consider any of them big projects because they are ongoing and will never be 'done'. Other planners I've used have a whole focus on goals. Where do you want to be in 3 months, 1 year, 5 years, 10 years? That's great, but again, I don't have any big, lofty goals. In 5ish years I want to be getting ready for retirement, how do I make that happen aside from what I'm doing? So these don't really work for me anymore. They did a few years ago when I was working on my Ph.D. and planning the move to Arizona and basically living hand to mouth, yeah, these types of things worked. Now they don't. I go days without writing in my planner because I got nothing going on. So I was looking for a simple planner to just keep track of things. I even think, I've reached the point where I don't need a daily one but just a monthly will do. But all them have some sort of gimmick for productivity or a happy life or whatever. I'm good with that stuff. I have a great life, I'm productive when I need to be, I'm good. Then I stumbled across the Traveler's notebook. Wait, I have a cover for that. I then searched Amazon for monthly inserts and found them. I'm in. I have a couple of blank ones that I will use today, but tomorrow the monthlies come - yay, July 1st - and I will set up my Traveler's notebook and use that. I'm excited. I just want simple. I don't want to have to spend hours on my planner. I want it to keep track of things and that's all I need. Yes, simplicity is my goal.
