Think about what you eat

Confession time. My eating recently has not been that good. It hasn't been that bad but there is lots of room for improvement. So yesterday in an effort to get back on track I fasted. I don't think that skipping food for 24 hours puts you into starvation mode. I just don't buy it. There is no doubt in my mind that cave people went for 24 hours at a time without food. I think it takes sustained food restriction to kick in the 'starvation' response. These are just my opinions and have no real basis in fact. They are arrived at from my knowledge of biology in general and reading I've done. After not eating for 18 hours I feel fabulous. I have energy and just feel great. I can understand the attraction of anorexia, but you can't do this all the time and expect the same feelings.

But the fasting got me to thinking about food. I've started work and that means I'll be at school a lot more. Two days a week I'll have lunch at school, but the other days I'll be getting home right around lunch time and I've got to get a handle on my eating. So a little thought and investigation lead to a discovery. Fresh Express has come out with some new salad greens. Okay, Fresh Express is not a discovery but their new stuff is. They now have Tender Ruby Reds and Sweet Tender Greens. These are great. They contain lots of greens that contain lots of phytonutrients. I always try to eat things that give you a lot of bang for the buck. That means I prefer to eat veggies that contain lots of stuff. For instance, iceberg lettuce, while I like it, isn't the best lettuce you can buy. I prefer superfoods.

So here's what I'm thinking. I'll pick up some of these Fresh Express lettuces, I'll make a lunch full of food that provide lots of phytonutrients, and I'll get back on the wagon. Or horse. Or whatever. I've figured out how to get my calories burned up over 2300 a day, now all I need to do is get a handle on my eating and I'll be all good again. Looks like I'll be shopping this weekend.

Try googling "intermittent fasting", you'll find some good resources on the benefits of occassional fasting. I myself do it two or three times a week for 12-15 hours each time, most of the time that includes overnight sleep.
